Having practically circumnavigated the world and since retired and become an assisant CEO of Florida vacation villa rental website of www.fabvillas.com I thought I would start to write about the trials and tribulations of same, the travel not the website that is.
Do you use a travel agent or go it alone? Having done both I think the latter is my preference. Nothing difficult in booking a flight to your chosen destination and if your truly adventurous wait till you arrive and get a taxi to take you to a hotel.
My first experience of this was on a trip my wife and I were taking to final destination Oman in the Gulf.
We started to book the flights as stated above and having questioned the price, it was so cheap, it was like the old adage, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is! The reason for the low price was a) Its not direct b) Its with Egyptian Air and b) the pilot might ask you the way.
That now prompted the wife to say well if it’s going to Cairo we can go and see the pyramids. Like we were visiting long lost friends on the way. Maybe she was, friends from a former life, maybe?
We opted for British Airways in the end (at least the pilot would know the way) and to make it special we opted for Business class as well.
Off we set-to London Airport and from there to Cairo
Arriving in Cairo in the evening. I had taken the time to ask the party that we were eventually meeting in Oman, if he could recommend a suitable hotel in the area. Bad move. The man in question was a minister in the government and as such was accustomed to 1st class everything. Me?
A London cabbie and wife on an adventure.
The hotel verbally recommended was The Oberoi Mena House. So armed with this information my wife and I leave the terminal building into the heady and balmy night air of Cairo. Walk across to the taxi rank and ask the first taxi driver to take us to The Mena House please. You would have thought I had just asked him to sell his daughter into slavery
Remember I have been in this position at Heathrow, where I used to conduct business. I said to my wife, “Oh it must only be local”. This was purely on the cab drivers actions and the look on his face. That pleading look in his eyes, that I must have shown many times. The look that says or (you hope it does) “Oh please guv not me I’ve waited here for over an hour and you only want to go round the corner” Ever had it happen to you?
I was ready to capitulate when all of a sudden a scruffily dressed policeman approached two bewildered tourists and this cab driver who was acting like he had just been diagnosed with some terminal illness and won the lottery at the same time.
“You have a problem” said the policeman. “No, I don’t think so” I said. “Where do you want to go?” he enquired. “Well we wanted to go to the Mena House, but if its only local we’ll take a bus or maybe they have a courtesy service?” says I defending the cabbie in his efforts to “broom the job”
In a most authoritative voice the officer turned to the driver and said “Mena House” accompanied by a cursory wave of the hand.
Still naively trying to defend this hard done by cab driver, I interject “Hey! Look if it’s local I’ll take a bus. How much will it cost to get there?” The policeman repeated the enquiry to the driver. The reply “Eleven Pounds” That in someway told me that it was in fact a short ride. Wrong!!!!!
So the cases were placed into the boot of this beat up vehicle. Nothing like the regulation vehicle I was used to pushing around the streets of the capital back in the UK.
Of paramount importance is the horn must be in full working order. The other attribute is a heavy right foot. So at breakneck speed we departed the airport area and entered what the driver must have. thought The Indianapolis 500.
After 30 minutes or so of swerving, hooting an gasping the white knuckle ride was coming to and end and we were treated to the sight of the pyramids. My wife and I in unison exclaimed Wow!
We had arrived at this opulent and historic hotel “Oberoi Mena House Hotel was originally a royal lodge built for Egypt’s Vice King Khedive Ismail and used when he and friends were hunting in the desert or visiting the pyramids.”
The cabbie sprung out of this deathtrap he had the gall to describe as a taxi, I asked “How much” he smiled a toothy grin and replied,” Eleven Pounds effendi” Feeling entrepreneurial I handed him Fifteen pounds. Well you’d have thought I had just given him the key to unlocking King Tuts personal fortune. He bowed and scraped as he took the suitcases into the reception area brushing aside the liveried staff.
That was the start of the adventure

Only two to three hours away by air from most of Europe’s major airports is the sunny Algarve in Southern Portugal. Known for its spectacular coastline and rugged mountain scenery the Algarve is one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations. There are no less than 24 golf courses spread out along this most southern province of Portugal, several of which are classified as championship golf courses hosting many international golfing events.
Most of the golf courses can be found to the west of Faro, including the famous San Lorenzo course - rated as the second-best course in Europe. Set in the splendid surroundings of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, the San Lorenzo course has become a ‘must play’ course for all those who come to visit the Algarve for its golf. There are some challenging holes and tricky water features to negotiate around the course, and when coupled with the amazing scenery, it makes for an epic round of golf.
Further along the Algarve coastline is the Royal Course at Val de Lobo. Incorporating fairways and greens set in an undulating landscape of pine trees, the Royal Course serves up a fine golfing experience for all who come here. The course includes the famous par 3 9th hole, which takes players over a beautiful lake and onto a semi-island green - it’s a challenge for even the most experienced of golfers! But, if you fancy a sea view then you might be more at home at Val de Lobo’s other course - the Ocean Course.
The Ocean Course is set along undulating cliffs that descend down to golden sandy beaches. Narrow fairways are a feature of this course, as are the ochre coloured rocks that line the cliff sides and snake along the course edge. Adding to the challenge golf players must compensate for sea breezes that regularly caress the course. All in all, it makes for a memorable round of golf.
Southwest Portugal
Eight of the Algarve’s twenty-four courses are situated in the Southwest. Within 20-minutes of Faro is the Vale do Milho - an ideal practice course on which beginners can learn the game and holidaymakers can sharpen their golfing skills. A little further to the west is Quinta do Gramacho - Europe’s first ‘double-nine’ designed course, with only 9 fairways but 18 holes. If you want a unique golfing experience, then Quinta do Gramacho is the perfect course on which to play.
For those on a tour of the golf courses in the Algarve, the Alto Golf course is sure worth a visit. Situated close to the coastline it offers fine views of the sea and the nearby mountains. The course was designed by Sir Henry Cotton - three-times British Open Champion - and takes in fairways and greens along some beautiful undulating terrain surrounded by vineyards.
Finally, no golfing visit to the Algarve is complete without playing a round of golf at Penina. Located close to the fishing village of Alvor, Penina was the first grass course in the Algarve. It is rated as one of Europe’s finest and plays host to a range of international tournaments each year.
Visitor Information
Faro is the main international airport in the Algarve. Most of the golf courses are located to the west of the Algarve, Parque de Floresta golf course - the Algarve’s most westerly course - being just under an hour’s drive from the airport. Car hire is available from Faro airport.

ACCREDITED VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS AND INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION--ON CAMPUS OR ONLINE!
People interested in a medical assistant or similar related career often are unsure of what to loo

ACCREDITED VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS AND INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION–ON CAMPUS OR ONLINE!
People interested in a medical assistant or similar related career often are unsure of what to look for in vocational training institutions and what they should expect from the program they choose.
It is highly recommended that those who seek formal training opt for accredited training programs that meet the clearly defined and strictly upheld criteria of one of the regional or national accreditors. Finding out whether a school or online course and their programs are accredited is an important step in determining whether the education provided will meet all learning goals and is truly worth the time and money.
WHAT IS ACCREDITATION?
In the United States most accreditations are granted by the government, approved state agencies, or organizations, and associations that rely on a variety of advisory groups in their continuous effort to improve the safety and quality of education and training provided to the public. In addition, most states have some means of approving or certifying the operation of independent and other nonpublic schools.
The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) are accreditors for postsecondary programs, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is the largest specialized accreditor in the health sciences field, the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredits private postsecondary institutions and programs preparing individuals for entry into the medical assisting profession, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) strives to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations.
Graduates of postsecondary medical assisting programs accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES are immediately eligible to take AAMA’s Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification exam. Graduates from ABHES accredited medical assisting programs are also immediately eligible to take the RMA examination offered by the American Medical Technologists (AMT). Both CAAHEP and ABHES publish a list of their accredited programs.
Accreditation for different level public and private educational institutions, colleges, universities, graduate schools in the United States is divided into geographical areas. There are six regional accreditation bodies:

Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA)
New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NASC)
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

Important is that those seeking medical assistant training should not overlook that an accredited versus a legitimate institution does not always mean the same thing! There is a plethora of different accreditations offered in the United States covering all imaginable areas of vocational and higher education. Some institutions claiming these accreditations are not necessarily always legitimate. Only fully accredited institutions have the above listed accreditations.
A WORD OF CAUTION ABOUT ONLINE TRAINING!
Distance education over the Internet provides e-learners with the convenience, flexibility, and the ability to study anywhere, any time without being on campus. However, taking courses online doesn’t always mean that the program they have chosen is accredited or legit and sometimes, if not careful, the diploma they receive is not even worth the paper it is printed on.
Online training providers, non-traditional universities, and colleges who offer virtual and distance learning programs have different accreditation standards and it is important to recognize the difference between legitimate and fully accredited vs. illegitimate and non-accredited ones before signing up for such courses.
The Internet is known for their many different types of scams. To ensure that you don’t waste your time or money, medical assistant students should choose only institutions that have full accreditation!
In closing, one final word of caution: training programs, especially those offered on the Internet, that use words such as approved, accredited, accreditation pending, authorized, chartered, empowered, licensed, recognized, registered, or any other profound sounding designation are not always legitimately accredited. Be aware of these common phrases!
Fly Discount Airlines And Save Money

Fly Discount Airlines And Save Money
In the last decade or two, discount airlines have revolutionized the workings of the airline industry. While their main priority has always been to get customers to their destinations without the conventional features of regular travel, security has never been compromised with. Jet Blue and Southwest, which offer their customers low prices and fly to a large number of important domestic destinations, are good examples of discount airlines.
In the past, discount airlines saved money by skimping on the unneeded details. For instance, instead of receiving a full dinner, you might just get a drink and a small bag of peanuts. Rather than offering movies on long flights, you would have to find ways to entertain yourself, and legroom was much less of a concern than it was for major airlines. However, these days, discount airlines are investing more in entertainment systems, and they are paying more attention to customer comfort.
This change in attitude is because they have to compete with major airlines that often offer discount prices to attract customers. When the major airlines offer comparable rates, the discount airlines have to match the frills to retain their customers. Consequently, customers find cheap tickets on discount and regular flights by searching online discount ticket retailers like Hotwire and Priceline.
If your planned destination is a sunny vacation town, discount airlines are usually still significantly cheaper than traditional companies. Many of the discount airlines focus their flights on destinations with agreeable climates. This gives them the corner on the vacation travel market, and it helps them save money by having to deal less with bad weather and the delays and maintenance costs associated with colder climates.
Many discount airlines specialize in cross-country flights and make most of their profits by flying just a few specific routes. Not wanting to lose the profitable business of cross-country travelers, major airlines have also begun to match discount prices. Needless to say, it’s the customer who is the real gainer.
If you can be flexible in your destination while planning a trip and researching prices, you can save a lot. Since many discount airlines fly to certain cities, you can save hundreds of dollars by slightly modifying your plans. For instance, if your destination is Austin TX, a small airport, it makes more sense to fly a discount airline to San Antonio and drive down to Austin.
Some discount airlines conduct flights only to small airports where fees are comparatively lesser than prominent airports. If may also prove profitable if you fly into a smaller airport using one such flight and then drive to your destination. The added advantage of flying into a smaller hassle-free airport is better than getting a discount. You not only get a good parking, you also get a good ticket price.
Whatever your destination, discount airlines can save you money. So, do some comparison shopping before you book your next flight. You’ll save hundreds of dollars by simply checking a few different airlines and some different airports. A little bit of research can go a long way in saving money on reaching your destination and you’ll have more cash in hand once you are there.

We haven’t met… yet, and until now you wouldn’t know that I make part of my living by writing about the city of Rome, its people, passions, food, sport, history and culture. In fact, I own a web site called Lets-Travel-Rome.com, which kinda happened by happy accident after I visited this great city with my Wife - one anniversary, some time ago.
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to travel to Rome, you’ll probably already know about the fervour and passion of its people, who can get themselves into a convincing frenzy over virtually anything that happens in daily life.
I had the chance to be in the city during the 2004 European Football Championships, at a time when the national team were heavily dependant on the form and talent of one Francesco Totti, Rome’s favorite footballing son, whose image cannot be avoided wherever you look!
Here is a God-Like figure, who Romans pin their hearts and hopes upon, every time he appears for the “Azzuri” (the national squad) or their beloved Roma (the capitals leading team for many years). It’s almost impossible to purchase a Roma team shirt without the “Totti” name emblazoned on its back, and his power over advertising media can clearly be appreciated by the range of products he is able to endorse succesfully around the cities poster sites.
You can probably imagine the atmosphere found in the streets during these crucial championship matches. The whole place draped with flags and banners, windows thrown open, filling the roads with the sounds of urgent cheering and disappointed groans.
Suddenly, we were taken by surprise, and Italy had scored a goal! A massive uprising was taking place all around us, and the waiter at our streetside cafe was off… running in triumphant circles around the middle of the road. Cars were hooting, people were leaning out of their windows to cheer and share in the chaos, and normal life was suspended for several minutes whilst the Romans celebrated their modern day gladiators success.
About half an hour later we became aware of an eary silence, and the unthinkable had happened without our realisation. The opposing team had scored an equalising goal, putting Italy out of the final stages of the competition, and a grave period of mourning was about to begin. Our waiter leaned listlessly against the side wall of our cafe, all interest in activity drained from his body… best get the bill and get out of here, we thought.
The next days papers carried furious reviews of the nights failings, and we couldn’t find anyone who wanted to discuss their dashed pride with mere tourists like us. Mr Totti still smiled down on us, as we continued to stroll around the deflated city, but we suspected his “pulling power” was sharply dimished that day.
But, this was Rome, and before our break was spent, the old passions were rising to the surface once more. Roma were to open the new season with a derby match against the Old Enemy, Lazio, and the rivalry between the two sets of fans is intense. The two teams share the Stadio Olimpico, which has a capacity of 100,000 screaming fans… the modern version of The Coloseum, or The Circus Maximus, we thought!
That’s all for now. In my next article, I’ll explain more of my travel tips for your time in Rome
Best wishes for a great vacation,
Les Sheppard

The coastal towns of Tofino and Ucluelet one at either end of the Pacific Rim National Park, are located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. These small towns used to rely on the abundance of the forestry and fishing industries, but with these resources dwindling, local businesses have begun to turn to their environment to provide once again. Via planes, boats, bikes and automobiles; tourists travel from all corners of the world to experience the pristine beaches, succulent rainforests and incredibly photogenic scenery.
Unlike most of Canada, the weather here is fairly mild all year. Winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing, but as these towns are both located in temperate rainforest climate be sure to bring your waterproofs. The Pacific Rim is very wet indeed. Layers of warm clothes, boots and hats are imperative for a comfortable visit.
Storm watching has recently become a new tourist phenomeneon. Visitors will stand witness to the fury of the Pacific ocean while epic winter waves rise and fall. You may be standing in the rain, bundled in heavy raingear watching from the beach. Or warm and cozy by a fire, sipping a martini as the waves smash against the rocks below. Several of the upscale lodges and hotels in the area offer both beach access and luxurious ocean view facilities for their visitors.
The variety of beaches along this coast are perfect for walking, hiking and running. Miles and miles of sand, ocean waves, wild shorebirds and mountain views make the Pacific Rim a perfect holiday destination. Wrap up warm and take a walk on the beach, while bald eagles and hunting ospreys soar above. Marvel at the flocks of tiny shorebirds and abundant sea life washed ashore. If you are lucky, you may even catch a rare sight of spray as a grey or humpback whale vents through its blowhole.
Whale watching is one of the most popular activities in the area. The migration of the grey whales are celebrated with the annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival in March, however whales can be seen all year round in these parts. Viewing with binoculars or a scope is good in several areas. Radar Hill and Amphitrite Point Lighthouse are two of the best. Pack a chair, a flask and your strongest binoculars or scope to get really great views of grey, humpback and killer whales, also known as orcas.
Spas, yoga, massage and wellness retreats are part of a healthy holiday regime. Tofino offers world class designer spa treatments, expert beauty services, professional esthetics and holistic and alternative massage programs. Lomi lomi, swedish massage, shiatsu, acupuncture, relaxing therapy, chakra wellness are offered both in the privacy of your own accomodation or in one of the many high class facilities. Tofino based facilities also offer hair salon service, an ocean view steam room, salt water pools and sauna. Private and group hatha, ashtanga and chakra yoga sessions are offered within the community on a daily basis. Keep your eyes on the community boards for special guest yoga instructors often flown in for exclusive workshops.
Hot Springs Cove is a luxury in Tofino that shouldnt be missed. Winter and spring are definitely the best seasons to visit Hot Springs Cove located about an hour north of Tofino by boat or 20 minutes by float plane. A tree canopied boardwalk tour takes you through the mystery of the rainforest from the landing dock to the hot natural pools. Seismic activity heats water bubbling to the surface and over a waterfall high enough to beat down onto a tired neck and shoulders. The hot water flows, decreasing in temperature from pool to pool before finally flowing into the ocean. The most bottom pool tickles the senses as hot water flows in and meets the cold ocean water as you sit within the tidal pull. Soak in the peace and quiet and let the stresses of everyday life melt away.
Tofino and Ucluelet have some world class reasturants. What better way to cap a day exploring the natural wonders than with a delicious meal? Fresh wild and local seafood are the highlights of the Pacific Rim. Salmon, halibut and dungeness crab are the signature dishes of the area. For landlubbers there is also a great assortment of local lamb, duck and triple A tenderloins as well. All meals can be paired with local Vancouver Island wineries or microbrewed beers. How’s that for taste!
If you’re coming for a weekend or a week, a visit to the Pacific Rim National Park, Clayoquot Sound, Tofino or Ucluelet will be sure to rejuvenate you. Once found, this paradise is one you’ll be sure to visit again and again. For more on Tofino Ucluelet and the Pacific Rim Park at http://www.tofino-longbeach.com

I will admit it, I love cruise vacations. I have been on several cruises including a cruise for my honeymoon, for New Years, and for multi-generational family vacations and I have loved each one.
More and more people are finding out about the pleasures of cruise vacations including singles, families, couples, honeymooners, second honeymooners and groups of friends or families. Last year alone approximately seven million people enjoyed a cruise vacation and here are some reasons why:
1) Cruise Vacations Are A Good Value
The price of your vacation includes all of your meals and in-between snacks on-board; your accommodation, activities, children programs and entertainment. Throw in the exciting journey to some of the most fascinating and charming places in the world and you have yourself a deal! You will also know what your vacation will end up costing you before you go. Typically, your only extra expenses are alcoholic drinks, specialty restaurants, optional shore excursions, and personal services such as a spa treatment.
2) Cruise Vacations Have Amazing Dining
You have so much choice and variety of cuisine on a cruise, you will not be disappointed. From gourmet meals that showcase renown chefs to pizza parlours and buffets. The choice is yours whether to sit down for an delectable five course feast or grab a hamburger at the bistro. The only thing that is guaranteed is that you will not go hungry on a cruise.
3) Cruise Vacations Will Pamper You
Regardless of which cruise you choose, all cruise lines pamper their guests with first-class service around the clock. Staff is there to make sure you needs are met. From chocolates on your pillow to your favourite drink waiting for you at your dinner table, you will feel like you are being spoiled day and night!
4) Cruise Vacations Have Tons of Variety
A cruise ship is a floating resort, with all the things a fine resort has to offer and more. You can go non-stop. Enjoy one great show after another, enjoy daily tour excursions, visit the spa, listen to a lecture, shop and then dance the night away. Or you can lie back and just read a book on deck and just let your cares float away…..do what you want to do.
5) Cruise Vacations Are For Everyone
There are over 150 different ships, dozens of cruise lines and over 1800 ports-of-call with hundreds of places to see and things to do. Small, large, formal, relaxed, budget, luxury, there is a perfect cruise out there for you.
6) Cruise Vacations Make Vacations Simple
The hassles of an ordinary vacation are completely eliminated because a cruise vacation is one convenient package. You don’t have to worry about making dinner or nightclub reservations, running to make flight connections as you travel from one destination to another, or packing and unpacking. Once you’re on board, nearly all expenses are pre-paid… it just does not get more carefree than that.
7) Cruise Vacations Are Great For Family Vacations
Families love cruising and often there is a reduced rate for children. Traveling with Grandparents? Even better, they will love it as much as the kids! With a variety of children’s programs geared from little ones to teens, kid-friendly menus, swimming, sports, games, movies, and exploring new places, your kids will not be bored for a second. The experienced child councillors will keep your children happy, while allowing you some time alone. And speaking of some adult alone time….
8) Cruise Vacations Are Great For Couples And Romance
During the day you can enjoy secluded beaches or romantic villages, enjoy en suite dining on a balcony overlooking the ocean or spa services for two. At night, enjoy dancing, musical shows, gaming or a quiet evening watching the moon bounce off the ocean as the warm breeze drifts over the two of you….do I need to say more?
9) Cruise Vacations Are The Most Satisfying
Cruises have a higher percentage of satisfied customers than any other vacation experience, once people try it, they come back again and again. It me 10 years to convince my brother and his wife to try a cruise vacation, they finally took one last year and they have already booked another one this year!
10) Cruise Vacations Are The Ultimate Vacations
You can see the world on a cruise. Feel free to completely unwind or take a walk on the wild side. If you want you can dance the night away or go up on deck and steal a kiss from your love. Make new friends, feast on sumptuous cuisine, learn something new, or just hang out and bond with your family.
Whatever your heart desires, it can be done on a cruise so be sure to “choose to cruise” for your next vacation.

Driskill Hotel Austin Texas
This halloween I decided to fly to Austin Texas to hang out with some friends of mine. As a tribute to this mask clad holiday, we decided to stay at the Driskill Hotel, right off of 6th street. We had been told that it is one of the most haunted hotels in the United States, with at least 4 resident ghossts.
When we arrived the staff was amazingly nice and helpful. We requested our ghostly room and were given a room in the historical part of the hotel.
The rooms were neat and clean and the bathrooms beautifully laid out with gleaming black tile. The bathtub/shower was quirky, as the door didn’t slide but instead opened outward. Western style pictures adorned the walls and made you feel as if you had stepped back in time.
We quickly changed and went out to 6th street where a parade of Halloween schoolgirls, vampires and dark angels roamed the streets. On our way out we partook of the free Halloween snacks that the hotel was offering. The clubs and restaurants were filled with revelry, fine food and cold refreshing libations. The music was awesome,as well, with every flavor of music that you can imagine.
We returned to our room much later to find chocolate mints on our pillows, and the covers turned down.
There were no ghosts that night but the delightful memory of this hotel’s hospitality will haunt our memories for years to come.

From Cape Reinga in the north right through to Wellington in the south, New Zealand’s North Island offers some unique opportunities to tourist and locals alike.
Auckland city is the busiest New Zealand city and arguably the commercial capital of New Zealand. Being one of the most populated cities, Auckland offers some of the best shopping opportunities in New Zealand.
Wellington is the capital city and has a population of around 400,00. The main attraction in Wellington would have to be Te Papa, which is a museum located in the city. While at Te Papa, make time for a stroll around Queen’s wharf or a cruise in the Wellesley or catch a play at Circa theatre. The Interislander ferry can also be caught from Wellington to travel across the Cook strait to Picton in the South Island.
Other attractions in the North Island include the Maori village in Rotorua, ski fields in the central North Island, stunning beaches in the Coromandel and Hawke’s Bay, Huka falls near Taupo and Mt Taranaki (also known as Mt Egmont), which was the location for the filming of the Tom Cruise flick “The Last Samurai”. Lord of the Rings tours are also available and extremely popular with Tolkien fans!

Snow-capped Kilimanjaro, floating above the clouds is no doubt one of the most beautiful and impressive sights in the natural world. Even hard-boiled non-believers, in their unguarded moments, empathise with the Maasai who call it the “House of God”. The mountain is one of the Seven Top Summits of the world -it has the highest point on the African continent. Though there are higher mountains, they form part of mountain ranges, Everest for example. But Kili, as it is popularly known, is the highest freestanding mountain in the world. It rises gently from 3,000 feet, reaches for the heavens and only halts after a 16,000 feet ascent. The diameter at the base is an amazing 64 kilometres.
Kilimanjaro is located to the northeast of Tanzania, on the border with Kenya. There is a popular myth of how the mountain came to be part of Tanzania, which was at one time part of the German Empire. Queen Victoria is supposed to have granted the mountain to her German grandson Wilhelm (later Kaiser Wilhelm II) as a birthday gift. It is also said that the Germans had been grumbling at the blatant unfairness of missing a snowcapped mountain within their empire while the Queen has two - the second being Mount Kenya.
Though historians have discredited the myth, it has refused to die and it is still a source of amusement for many. Unwilling to allow the truth to stand in the way, some anti-colonial historians fume with indignation, citing how the boundaries of Eastern Africa were arbitrarily decided in the capitals of the imperial powers. To most people in the west, Kilimanjaro has long been associated with Ernest Hemingway on account of his 1936 short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”. In 1952, Hollywood fascinated by the magic of Kili the book evokes, turned it into a movie with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner in leading roles.
Kilimanjaro is young as far as mountains go, and geologists allow it only 750,000 years. The mountain is made up of three dormant volcanoes -Kibo (19,340 feet), Shira (13,000 feet) and Mawenzi (16,896 feet). Kibo occasionally belches some steam and sulfur. The highest point on Kibo is Uhuru Peak, where you see some awesome glaciers and fantastic views of the country below. Though Kili is only three degrees south of the equator, the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi are covered in ice and snow year round. Many learned people in Europe hotly disputed that a snow-capped mountain could be found at the equator when the German missionary Johann Rebmann reported it in 1849.
Going up the mountain, you move from tropical to artic conditions. There are five distinct climatic zones, with each zone taking approximately 3,300 feet. The zones are- the lower slopes, then forest, then moorland, alpine desert and the summit. The lower slopes are cultivated and agriculture flourishes. The forest region is dry in the north and wet towards the southern slopes. The forest carries many tree species including podocarpus, camphor, fig and olive trees and bamboo. The only animals to be found here are blue and Colobus monkeys and a variety of birds including hornbill and turaco. At the moorland region, you find the giant groundsels and lobelias common in the high altitude mountain regions of eastern Africa. Further up, vegetation and animal life are sparse.
Kili is the worlds’ most accessible summit. Any reasonably strong and ambitious person, without using any special mountaineering equipment can conquer this giant. It is however hard work. Altitude and the resulting thin air will be the main challenge and not your failing strength. To avoid succumbing to high altitude sickness, you guides will constantly advise, you take the mountain slowly, slowly or “pole pole” as they say in Swahili. You should therefore avoid a quick ascent and take time to acclimatise to the mountains’ oxygen challenged air. By ignoring such good advice many young males fail to reach the summit, when older more deliberate climbers make it.
To enjoy the natural beauty and majesty of Kili, you do not even have to climb it. By using a four-wheel drive vehicle, you can ascend to the Shira Plateau, which is perched at 12,000 feet. The first person recorded to have reached the summit is the German climber Hans Meyer in 1889. Unlike today’s climber, he did not have the benefit a route map and he only made it on the second attempt. Having been taught a lesson in humility, for the second try, he brought along an Alpine expert and a local guide. Meyer named the summit after the Kaiser Wilhelm II, but this was years later revised to Uhuru or freedom in Swahili. Since the days of Meyer, the icecap has receded and scientists worry that it will vanish altogether in 20 to 50 years. So, hurry up and climb Kili while it is still such a pretty sight.
Today, few climbers few use the difficult route pioneered by Meyer. The climb normally takes five to six days and involves four to five overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts. The Marangu route, which was established way back in 1909 is the easiest and most popular and is used by over 90% of climbers. Experienced climbers prefer the more scenic and difficult Machame route. Climbers are not entirely without a sense of humour and they refer to Marangu as the coca cola route, and Machame as the whiskey route. Other routes are Shira, Mweka and Umbwe.
Shira is a scenic route that takes you through the Shira Plateau, which you reach by four-wheel drive vehicle. The route gives you great views of the Rift valley and Mount Meru. Using Mweka, you reach the summit and return to base in 4 days. But as you may suspect, it is quite steep and therefore not easy at all. The Umbwe route is even steeper and quicker and you take only three days up and down. The route is spectacular, but it is for the fit and experienced and not casual climbers. In addition, there are technical routes such as the Western Breach and Lemosho routes.
Regardless of the route you pick, all Kili climbs start at Marangu Gate. This is where you get your permit and pay entry fees. On the typical Marangu route climb, spend four nights up the mountain. The route is clearly marked right to the summit. You start by trekking through the forest zone to Mandara Hut (9,000 ft) for the first night. Onward through moorland, you halt for a second night at Horombo Hut (12,450 ft). Then through the alpine desert, your third night finds you at Kibo Hut (15,450 ft). But you really do not sleep there as you go for the summit just after midnight. You then descend back to Horombo Hut for your last night after an overall trek of about 77 kilometres. If you want to spend more time up high to acclimatise, you can overnight twice at Horombo Hut.
On the Machame route, you spend one night more on the mountain. You overnight at Machame Hut, Shira Hut and Barranco Hut. You connect to the Mweka route and continue to Barafu Hut. After tackling the summit, you descend for your last night at Mweka Hut. On the next day, you rejoin other mortals at the base of the mountain. You are advised to pick the route that best fits your experience. Most aspire to reach Uhuru Peak - the highest point on Kibo -and indeed all Kili. Others are satisfied with Gillman’s Point, the slightly lower peak on Kibo. But Mawenzi, actually lower than the Kibo peaks, is more jagged and requires mountaineering experience. Many climbers find scaling Kili, whatever height they reach, a very satisfying experience.
But do not be too disappointed if you do not reach the summit.Different estimates indicate that only 15-30% of climbers get to the top. Climbing Kilimanjaro is for those who are physically fit and mentally prepared. It is your ability to muster that extra dose of determination that will count when the going gets tough. In terms of physical preparation, start by taking hikes uphill with a pack strapped on your back. This rehearses the climb, minus the altitude of course. Think also of putting in some aerobic training at the gym and by jogging. If you are having heart or lung problems, better not risk the climb. In all cases, it is a good idea to talk to your personal physician to ensure that you do not bite more than you can chew.
It is best you buy a climbing tour package to take advantage of those with local knowledge. The typical package will bundle together: return transfers - Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, park and rescue fees, services of guides, porters and cooks, accommodation in mountain huts and all meals on the mountain. In addition, you need to hire locally or bring along equipment and sleeping bags. Some useful stuff to gather include - waterproof hiking boots, rain suit, flashlights, sunglasses, prophylactics for high-altitude sickness, hand gloves and night shoes. You need a daypack to carry a few essentials, as the porters carrying your equipment will usually hike their own way. Some items to carry on your back include bottled water, extra clothes, camera and sunscreen. Besure to review and book our very good value Kilimanjaro Climbing offers.
You can climb Kili, any time throughout the year. But it is obviously less fun during the March to June period when it rains the most. The second and lighter rains come from late October to early December. The best time is when it is warm and dry - January, February and September. July, August, November and December also good, though cooler. Due to the variation of conditions along the route- from tropic to arctic - it is convenient to dress in layers you can either shed or add on. Generally, in the northern Tanzania region, you can expect temperatures to average from 15C in May to August and 22C over December to March. At the mountain, temperatures drop by roughly 1 degree Celsius for every 650 feet ascended.
Many climbing enthusiasts want Christmas and the New Year to find them up the mountain, and unless you book early, it is difficult to get a slot. The best way of relaxing after the trek is by taking a safari in the unrivalled wildlife sanctuaries of northern Tanzania or heading to the beaches of Zanzibar. We have covered these attractions in earlier editions of this newsletter here.
You can book your safari or Zanzibar stay and Kili climb together - have a look at our Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Hotel offers. If you want to put together your own safari, then visit the Tanzania Car Rental and Tanzania Hotels and Lodges pages of our website.
Kilimanjaro is 475 km to the northwest of Dar es Salaam. The base for climbing Kili is nearby northern Tanzania towns of Moshi or Arusha. Kilimanjaro International Airport services the region. But it is usually cheaper to disembark at Nairobi in Kenya and then to take a shuttle bus to Arusha.
